What is the best image scanner for me?

Q: I'm about to start college, so the cheaper the better. I'm also not great when it comes to technical stuff, so the simpler the better as well. If it helps to know, I need it to scan old (1910s/1920s old) and new pictures of my family...part of my Christmas present to them is going to be a DVD with pictures/music and video. Christmas is a while off, but I figured it would take me a while to scan all the pictures... Thanks for the help!

A: I've had luck with HP All-In-Ones (a 2-year-old F380 at work, and a 1-year-old C4180 at home). Both are combo scanners/color printers, and at under $100, they're as cheap as scanners without printers. (The print quality is good, and it's been very useful the few times I've needed to make a copy and not had the time to run to Kinko's.) I'm not up on the current models/prices (they seem to come out with new models every few months), but check the ads for them at Office Depot or similar places and get what's on sale. You're right -- scanning a bunch of photos is time consuming, so it's best to get started early.
