How do you change a scanned picture to 75 pixels by 75 square?

Q: I have an etsy account and they require your photo to be 75 by 75 pixels square. I just got a new Vista and don't know how to do this. Any help out there will be appreciated. Thank you in advance.

A: I use a free program called Irfanview (www.irfanview.com), but there are other programs out there which will do about the same thing. First, open the picture. Crop it so it's square (otherwise the reduced version will be distorted.) (Edit menu in Irfanview). Then re-size it (Resize/Resample in the Image menu in Irfanview). If the original isn't quite square, uncheck the "Preserve Aspect Ratio" box and set both height and width to 75. Finally, go to Sharpen (Irfanview Edit menu). When you shrink a picture, it gets blurry; Sharpening it will improve the quality. Remember to save it into a different name so you don't lose your original. Irfanview won't warn you to save before closing, so make sure you remember to save it. If your picture needs brightening or enhancement, you can do all that in this program, too.
