How to find out how many dpi and resolution a jpeg image is?

Q: I bought a Epson V700 scanner and I am trying to make digital prints from developed prints. My scanner is capable of 10,800dpi but whenever I try to scan images to a very high resolution, an error meassage comes up. I scanned some pictures on the auto setting and would like to know what dpi and resolution they were scanned to. I am running windows xp pro.

A: the higher the dpi the bigger the file is.10800 is way too big if you making it for a web post scan the image at no more then 300 dpi if you doing it for a home pic to reprint or detail go to 1200 dpi. remember the bigger the dpi the bigger the jpeg size. you don't want the image to be bigger then .8 megs on the web and for a reprint 1200 is high but a great resolution. i never ran my scanner that high you might of run out of hard drive space scanning at 10800 that why you got the error or ran out of ram memory. no need to scan past 1200 even 600 is alot.
