Q: Is it bad for your eyes or bad for your scanner pr both or what?
A: Sure you can, it's a cold cathode tube so it's not real bright and wont hurt your eyes, slam your face in it and give it a try The top just holds things flat and reflects evenly so as to have a better looking scan if the scanned item is opaque Also if the top is open and nothing in it it will scan almost black because not enough light is returned Toy around you wont hurt a thing, if you want to display something on your screen at it's original size scan it at 75-100 dpi, if its going to a printer scan at 300 dpi or the native resoultion of the printer
