Q: I'm planning on having a batch of 35mm negatives scanned at a local photo lab. They have a couple of options for resolution, one of which is really large. My question is, how do they manage to get such large resolution images out of a negative that's so small where as if you scanned a 4x6 print of the same photo, you'd still have a very small resolution image.
A: This is a function of the resolution of the scanner. How effective the scan actually will be is going to somewhat dependent on the grain of the original film. If you originally used a very high speed film, then a a very high resolution scan may not have significantly better results than a lower resolution scan.
