A: The first answerer is correct in that you don't get automatic updates (if you are connected to the Internet, the scanner doesn't look for updates, nor would the computer your scanner is connected to.) BUT there are updates made periodically, usually to make sure a product can continue to work if you upgrade your operating system. You still have to go to the Canon website and look for the newest drivers, but that isn't too hard.
