Q: i need to install an old hp scanjet on my new xp computer which doesnt have the required parallel port.
A: If you don't have drivers, you can get them here. http://snipr.com/1y0ao There are instructions there for the installation as well. As far as the connection, you can try an adaptor (parallel to usb) but in my experience, they don't work very well. Especially for scanners. If it's a desktop model of computer, you can buy a parallel port PCI card to install into your computer for fairly cheap. Here's an example: http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1003991&sku=C250-3706 If it's a laptop, you can get a PCMCIA card adaptor for parallel ports. They are pretty expensive, though. Here's an example of that: http://www.usbgear.com/computer_cable_details.cfm?sku=USBG-LPT-PCM&cats=472&catid=538%2C472%2C538%2C882%2C909 It may install quite easily, or it may give you a struggle. Even if the computer did have a parallel port built in, the 5100c scanners don't tend to work well with XP. Lots of connectivity issues. Ultimately, you are better off buying a new scanner, or an all-in-one printer/scanner/copier.
