Why is there a thick black line running through all my scanned objects?

Q: I have a problem with my scanner/printer, HP PhotoSmart 2575 All-in-one. Each time I scan an object, there is a thick black line (2 centimeters thick) running from top to bottom. There is no difference whether it is a document or photo. Even if I transfer it directly to the computer or USB disk, it still has this black line. But if I print a document from the computer, it is fine. It is only the scanner that has this problem. It was always perfect right up till yesterday. Is there anything I can do, without paying out a fortune for repairs. Thanks in advance to all who answer to this message. Tony.

A: clean the glass on the scanner part of the unit. Use a lint free cloth. Get something like Endust for electronics or a screen cleaner. Lift the lid of the unit as if you were going to use the flatbed scanner, and clean everything that is glass. scan and see what happens.
