Q: or do i need to have the ink cartridge installed to use the scanning feature (I want to buy lexmark x2500 all-in-one). any help is appreciated.
A: It is possible with certain makes and models. I just got rid of one that I used as a scanner for months with no ink, and got a new one that is suppose to be better, but without ink it's pretty much a large paper weight. I would do some research on your particular printer to find the correct answer.
