Selecting photo cartridge in a printing job.?

Q: I installed a photo cartridge in my Dell 946. I figured out it goes on the left in place of the black cartridge. But now when I go to print a picture, the printer keeps using my almost-out-of-ink color cartridge on the right. I can tell because the picture keeps coming out faded. Anyone know how to select the cartridge for a printing job? I've looked all through printer options and can't find anything. Thanks! I tried to select "print in black and white" in my printer preferences, but since putting the color cartridge in, it won't let me make that choice! I also tried printing w/o the other color cartridge in, but it didn't like that one was empty. Thank you!

A: A photo cartridge is not used to replace a the color cartridge, it is used in combination with the color cartridge. A photo cartridge only has three colors in it. Light black, light magenta, and light cyan, it cannot print every color of the spectrum with this cartridge, it needs the color cartridge with the yellow magenta and cyan ink. So yes your photos are faded and look wrong because you are almost out of color ink. You need a color cartridge to print photos. A photo cartridge is only complimentary and not intended to replace your color cartridge in photo printing.
