What's better, ink jet or laser?

Q: I am looking to possibly buy a new printer, as my current inkjet is starting to produce less quality prints. It was pretty inexpensive to begin with so I'm not sure if I want to have it repaired. I was thinking of buying another inkjet, but I find the cartridges to be pretty expensive. I have been looking at some laser printers as well, but find they are also more expensive to buy. Is there any advantage to buying a laser vs. an inkjet?

A: Over the long run, inkjet cartridges tend to be more expensive than laser. Most people don't know this, but every time you finish a print job, the print heads clear themselves - which leads to a lot of wasted ink over time. Inkjet printers are cheaper to buy your right, but if you do enough prints, it will cost you in the long run. If you are using the printer often enough, it might be best to go with a laser. You will tend to get better yields from a laser cartridge compared to an ink jet. It is also useful to check the number of page yields associated to each cartridge.
