how do you add a new printer to your computer?

Q: ok, its pluged in and all that, and i have windows xp and when i go to control panel and click printers and other hardware and click add a printer, when i go to put in my printer name, it doesnt show up, i have a canon pixma MP160 and this is used, from someone from my familym, so i dont have any papers to it or manual or anything, not even the disk, anyhelp? A: go back to the beginning of the add printer wizard. click on "local printer attached to this computer." then click off "automatically detect and install my plug and play printer." lpt1 is fine. Then, it should give you a list of manufacturers and models. if your printer isn't listed, then use windows update. if it is, select it and that's it.
