Q: Would you know the best Dell desktop specs/printer specs for a small digital photography business?
A: Today you don't need some supercomputer to do digital photography. You should have a lot of disk space but you can get a 500 gig for under $100. You should have at least 2 gigs of ram. The monitor is most important, you should probably spring for the 22". And of course a high speed video card with at least 128mb ram. But all told, if you watch the Dell specials, you be spending no more than $700. I do some video editing and digital photography and my Dell system was $400 to which I added ram and a bigger hard drive. As for the printer, unless you want to spring really big bucks for a wax printer, you want an inkjet. Color laser just doesnt approach the quality of inkjet on glossy paper.Top of the line are Epsons 6-color plus 2 different black printers like the R800 and 1800. Next fomes the 5-color and 1 black like the RX595, which has a scanner/copier function and prints on DVDS. You can find it for $80 after $55 instant rebate here: http://www.cheapstingybargains.com/54342/epson-rx595-stylus-multifunction-photo-printer-copier-scanner/ As someone who was in the computer hardware business for years (though I rarely sold printers since I couldn't compete with the crazy rebates I have always recommended Epson. The print quality is excellent, even on plain paper. I have photos I printed on a 640 about ten years ago hanging in my office which still look good, though not as good as the ones from the later models on glossy paper. The warranty is excellent. For a year, Epson will express-ship a replacement and pick up the old one. I had one customer who needed this. He called one afternoon and had the replacement two days later. Another client bought a Canon. It needed two repairs within a few months. Each time it was taken to the repair center, then picked up a few days later. This client runs a specialty printing business and this really hurt. They have since bought an Epson CX5000 and have had no down time since. All name brand ink is expensive, but you can get cheap new replacement cartridges for Epson (not refills which I never recommend) for under $5 at http://ccs-digital.com/ink.asp The results look great, though I can't guarantee they'll last 100 years like Epson claims their ink will. Since I've been using them for about 10, ask me in another 90 years. For best results you need Epson photo paper or a close match. A lot of the other brands, even HP, dont work with Epson printers. Epson ink is formulated differently. I have had good results with GSI photo paper and Epsons. good luck
