Can you print photos on quality photo paper with a HP Deskjet 3940 printer?

Q:

A: Why not? All inkjet printers can print on quality photo paper; it's still paper. It's just that some inkjet printers produce much better results than others because they're designed to perform better with quality photo paper. Check the properties of your printer and make sure that there is an option for photo paper/high resolution paper under paper types; and also that there is an option for high quality/high resolution printing. This typically gives the best results for printing photos on quality photo paper. Some printers however use inks that don't get absorbed well into the surface of some types of quality photo paper. The ink simply doesn't dry and the whole picture smears. It's a trial and error thing. You're probably OK with a HP brand printer with HP inks and HP brand paper, but if you're using some other combination, please test on a small area first. For really nice pictures your printer needs to have been designed for printing high quality photos (ie very small dots, brilliant coloured inks, long life inks). You can still print photos on any other printer, but they won't look as good.
