Q: If I have an printer in my house (specifically an HP deskjet 5650) that is hooked up to another computer on the same network, how can I print to it wirelessly with my laptop? Also, can I do this even if it's not hooked up to a PC? Best answer goes to the person who gives the most thorough yet simple directions. If it helps, the printer is NOT hooked up to my router, but if absolutely necessary, it can be done.
A: You cannot print to the printer unless it is hooked up to the other computer and the computer is on. The only way you can avoid this is to buy a print server, which you can probably get for around $40. To print to the printer across a wireless connection, you must first share the printer on the network. On the computer the printer is hooked up to, goto the control panel, then printers, then right click on the printer and click Share. Give the printer a network name you can easily remember. Before any of this is done, you must have file and print sharing enabled on both computers. To do this, goto control panel, network connections, then right click your active connection, select properties, then make sure File and Print sharing is checked. Also, the two computers should be in the same work group, but is not completely necessary. To do this, right click on My Computer, select Properties, then click on the Computer Name tab. The final step is to add the printer to your laptop. Goto control panel, printers, click Add a printer. Click Next. Select "A network printer, or a...". Click browse for printer. If the printer does not show up you must type in the name of the printer manually. \\name of computer\printer name
