what is wrong with my printer?

Q: i have a epson stylus cx4200. I have replaced the black ink because it was gone now it still says I'm out of ink and won't print anything. I have checked all the other inks and shook them to make sure they had ink and all of them have ink. I only really use the black. What else can I do? I want to print some stuff out and it won't let me. How do I check my ink and printer to see what is wrong. Thanks. I don't leave it plugged in I just plug it in when I need it and the rest of the time I store it away because there isn't enough room. How do I see if the ink is clogged up? I don't know how to do anything when it comes to this so please give directions. thanks.

A: Let's start with an obvious but common issue: did you remember to take the tape off the top of the cartridge? If air cant get in, ink cant get out. Are you sure it's the new cartridge which it thinks is out of ink and not one of the other ones? When you replace a cartridge, it runs through a cleaning cycle which uses ink and often another cartridge ends up getting emptied. If that's not it, run the replace function again as if you were replacing the cartridge again, take it out, shake it and put it back. Maybe the printer just didn't "get it." If that doesnt work, take out the cartridges and use a flashlight to examine where they go. I once found a sliver of cartridge chip stuck to the pins which was shorting them out.
