Well because printer manufacturers like using technical mumble jumble, in reality the word monochrome can be broken down into two parts: mono... and ... chrome. The latter of which is a word denoting relationship to color, the first, mono, meaning one color. (One color because in reality black and white is really varying amounts of black)
