Connecting an older printer to a Windows Vista machine?

Q: I have two computers, a desktop running Vista and a laptop running XP, and a printer that is several years old (Epson Stylus 740i). I need to print from each computer, so when I need to print from the other one I disconnect the printer cable from one computer and re-connect it to the other. No problem with the XP machine, but each time I connect the cable to the Vista machine it re-installs the printer driver and creates a new printer icon in Printers (copy #n), and the existing default printer icon (copy #n-1) no longer works. Is there a way to change this behavior so I don't keep having to change the default printer to the new icon? Big R, your answer is not correct -- I CAN print from the Vista machine to the printer, but with the inconvenience that I described.

A: If you can still find one, go look for a printer sharing a-b switch. It hooks 1 printer to 2 computers with a switch to change between computers. When print from computer a, change the switch to a. when print from computer b, change switch to b. some of these are 'smart switches' and change between computers automatically as needed. NO network is needed to make this work.
