Why is my printer not recognized?

Q: I bought a canon pixma MP510 about a month ago and it has been working perfectly up until yesterday. There was an error message saying the printer was offline, I went into the printer settings to check and set it to be online, however it still wouldn't work. It is now saying when I plug the printer into the USB port that it is not recognized and the USB device has malfunctioned. It is not the USB port as I have tried the printer in two different computers and get the same message. I don't understand why as it was working perfectly well before. Does this mean a problem with the printer? Do I need to send it back? Or could it be a problem with the connecting cable? Any suggestions would be great as I can't be without a printer for too long and I really need to get this sorted.

A: Best suggestion: Try another USB cable. If you have tried the printer on 2 other computers and it does not detect so that you can install the drivers there may be a problem with the cable. Most common problem: Your cord hangs down where kids and/or pets play with it and the cord gets pulled so that one of the connectors goes bad. If it still does not work at that point. Contact the printer's tech support so that you can set up an RMA (Return Merchandise Authorization) so that you can send it in for warranty work or possibly have them replace the printer.
