What determines the quality of print for a dot matrix printer?

Q: A prompt answer would be surely appreciated

A: The quality is determined by the DPI setting (dots per inch) - the higher the better the quality. With dot matrix printers ink is not such a problem as it uses a ribbon that the pins strike, much like a typewriter. The other thing to be aware of, if the printer is not new, is that the pins may be damaged or worn down if used a lot although it does take a lot of usage for this to be a problem.
