What guidelines do I follow when a printer is not communicating with a laptop?

Q: A friend of mine has a Dell Inspiron 1100 and a HP Desjet 5740 printer. The printer no longer works. Even though I know nothing about printers and the instalation, I'm trying to help. Any suggestions on how to resolve the problem will be appreciated.

A: 1. It would help to know which OS the Inspiron is running. 2. Are you connecting the printer directly to the laptop or accessing it through the network? 3. When the printer is plugged in does it detect? With these details it makes it easier to tell you the answer. General information for a printer connected to a laptop through a USB connection with Windows XP (or older): 1. Go to Start | Printers and Faxes Is the printer listed here? If so (there should only be one listing for it under printers). Right click on it | (make sure it is set as default, that there is no checkmark next to use offline) and click on Properties. Click on the Test Page button. Does it print? Yes (may have found the problem if "offline" was chosen) If it prints here, but not in a program, what is the program it doesn't print out of? If it doesn't print: Does it give you an error message? Have you tried it in another USB port?
