How can I get my Dell PC to recognize the HP Officejet 5610 Printer that I am trying to install?

Q: I have installed an HP OfficeJet 5610 printer onto my Dell PC. I previously had a Lexmark Z23 installed. Windows XP was not recognizing the HP, even after installing the software and downloading various drivers from the HP website. I have also uninstalled the Lexmark printer, thinking this might help. Is there a simple solution to get my computer to recognize the new printer? I am not too savvy with computer knowledge myself, but can easily understand how to fix an issue like this if pointed in the right direction. I just want to have Office recognize that this printer has been installed! Can anyone help me?

A: I installed this printer for my sister and it was given to her secondhand so I know exactly what you mean about this model and I do know computers and hardware, the trick to this printer was doing something we all hate to do! Actually reading the setup manual! This printer is a bit picky, you have to install their software first but the trick is you CAN"T have the usb cord connected to the computer when you install the program, which you can get free with all the drivers from HP's site along with the setup file which I'll list as a source. It should tell you when to plug up the usb. This one threw me for a few minutes, it's some kind of a HP thing I guess. I'm guessing your USB was probably plugged in, if not go into your control panel and into printers and other hardware and make your computer search for newly installed hardware.
