Q: why are the letters on the keyboard all mixed up why isnt it in alphabetical order, wuldnt that be much easier, did anyone else ever think of this
A: Alphabetical order would not be easier. There are lots of studies (more than you would think) on the efficiency of keyboard layouts. The keyboard we all know and use is the qwerty keyboard (Note that the letters on the top row spell qwerty). It's actually not the most efficient keyboard layout, but it was essentially used first and has become the common one by tradition. I also hear that the qwerty keyboard was designed to be sub-optimal because typewriters could not keep up with human typing speed (long ago). Thus the layout is not very good and leads to slower typing (and also isn't very comfortable to jump all over the place). Now that we have PC's, it's the human that cannot keep up with the machine. There are better keyboard layouts that will probably never become popular, simply because the qwerty keyboard has taken over (similar to Windows....not exactly the best piece of operating system, but it's so common these days it's hard to avoid it). If you are looking for an easier keyboard layout to learn that is more efficient, comfortable, and leads to faster typing speeds, look into the dvorak keyboard layout. Most operating systems let you change the keyboard settings, so you can use your standard keyboard and just change the settings on the computer - the only downside is the keys will all be labeled wrong. The dvorak keyboard was created to be efficient. The most commonly used letters are on home row, with the least used letters on the bottom row. It's also more comfortable if you type for long periods of time.
