Q: Does It make files harder for a hacker to find?
A: Merely deleting a file does not get rid of it. The data still resides on the drive; only the information about that file has been deleted from the master file table. To securely erase that file from the drive, the file location has to be overwritten with other data, preferably multiple times. During the process of defragmentation, when the file fragments are moved around and rearranged in a contiguous manner, there is a possibility that the physical location of the 'deleted' file is overwritten by other files. This incidental 'secure erasure' of the deleted file is a byproduct of file movement during defrag and not a design feature of the defragmenter.
