Seagate Freeagent External Hard Drive..... broken USB port and NEED the files from it! Help :(?

Q: I have a 250GB Seagate Freeagent External Desktop Hard Drive and it is only 4 month sold. I tried it yesterday and noticed there was no connection. Checked the ports and the USB port on the HD was completely off the circutboard! This thing has a five year warranty, but I understand that the USB port in the hard drive is considered an 'accessory'. Well without this accessory, it doesn't work... I REALLY need it for college. All of my files are on there! I don't know how to get my files off cheaply and how to get it working again. I start college in two weeks. HELP! but isn't the closure just come with the casing part, not the usb port and adapter port?

A: No, golfer2 is right. Just get a new external case. It comes with everything except the hard drive, which you have in the one that doesn't work. But, you may want to call the Seagate support number and ask them about it because it sounds to me like it should be covered by the warranty. The warranty should cover both the case and the hard drive inside it. If not then yes, you'll need to get a new case. Here's a couple you can look at to get an idea: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817198004 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817198011 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817347015 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817173043 The last one has a fan like golfer2 recommended but personally I've had pretty good luck with most fanless cases, as long as they're aluminum, have good dissipation and circulation, and you don't use them in a really hot room. It's worth noting that the Seagate Freeagent Desktop is a fanless case. [edit] FYI: The hard drive inside that is an SATA Seagate Barracuda (probably the ST3250620AS) http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/products/desktops/barracuda_hard_drives/barracuda_7200.10/
