A: ndustry Standard Architecture (ISA), pronounced "eye-suh," is an expansion bus commonly used in PCs. It accepts plug-in boards that control the sound, video display and other peripherals. Most PCs today use the ISA and PCI buses and have a combination of ISA and PCI slots. However, the ISA bus is expected to be eliminated by the mid 2000s. ISA was originally called the "AT bus," because it was first used in the IBM AT, extending the original bus from eight to 16 bits. Earlier ISA PCs provided a mix of 8-bit and 16-bit expansion slots. Today most PCs have only 16-bit ISA slots. Contrast with EISA and Micro Channel.
