Why does my computer say it has less GBs than it does? (new computer)

Q: I just opened up my new computer today that came with 250 gbs. On the c: drive it says I have 163 of 219 gbs left. Why is it so much less? I know some programs probably come preinstalled, but is it that much? Also why isn't it out of 250 gbs instead of 219? Thanks!

A: This has been asked many times, so I'll reiterate my answer from another time: The amount displayed is different because of how gigabytes are measured. The industry standard counts 1 GB as 1,000,000,000 bytes, but 1 GB is actually 1,073,741,824 bytes if you use a binary counting system, which is the case for computers. So using the industry standard, you have 250 GB. Using the binary system, your computer will report somewhere around 219 GB. Regardless of the counting system, you still have "250" GB to work with. So no space is really lost, it's just the measuring system that gives different numbers. Your having 163 GB left is most likely because of all the pre-installed software and Vista itself. Uninstalling these programs will definitely clear up a lot of space. Hope this helps.
