Seperate power supply for sli ok?

Q: I recently set up a sli sytem at home, but i frequently get lock ups and crashes, i attribute this to my psu not being powerful enough (580 watts) i think i need about 650 for my setup. thing is i dont have much money as ive just bought the rig - but i do have a spare 300/350 watt psu. would i be able to use the main supply on hdd's, mobos, fans, disc drives ect ect. but use the 350 just for the 8800gt X2s in my rig im a system builder so you dont have to go lamens on me, i just wondered if the power supplys would interfere or not? and would i damage my board (athlon X2 6400;4gb 800mhz ram; asus mempipe deluxe edition) thanks in advance i wud prefer to use the 300 watt one for the gpu's, will this interfere with the motherboard? *350

A: yes you can get a dual psu adapter like this one http://www.ultraproducts.com/product_details.php?cPath=12&pPath=584&productID=584 it just connects the PS_ON and ground to the ATX connector to bring the second unit live in sync w/ the primary. One thing you will want to to is have some load on all the rails since some units have very poor performance in a crossload'ed environment (low +5v/+3.3v and high +12v rail demand) so I would try powering all the external devices (hdd/cd/dvd/fans) off the 350w and have the main unit only power the motherboard, +12v cpu and pcie connectors and see how that goes. You probably know this, but don't start splicing wires or connecting the psu connectors to each other, keep them isolated it's not good to have two sources share the same node, differences in voltages can be bad on the same wire. cheers
