Q: Can a 80 pin IDE cable be connected to a 40 pin slot (motherboard and hard drive) and still work ok? I have an older computer that still needs an old 40 pin hard drive and it seems that places only sell hard drives that use the new 80 pin interface. My motherboard does not support it either. Would using the 80 pin connector still allow a 80 pin hard drive to work at 40 pin speeds? (Hopefully that question is understandable).
A: Hi Ask for a cable that is 80-pin on one side, and 40-pin on the other side. This way, it will work unless the person at the compu store is lost.
