Q: i connected another harddisk to the pc with the writer's cables, and removed 3 times.now my dvd writer is not functioning properly,eg:when any file is being copied from drive to harddisk, computer is working slowly and if any media is playing, when copying, playback is disturbed.....tell me whether it is software problem or hardware problem...if it is software problem, does formatting pc and installing drivers will work?
A: Firstly, if you're using Windows XP or 2000 (maybe this works on Vista too, I'm not sure), go into Control Panel, System, Hardware, Device Manager and check the Advanced properties of all of your IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers (Primary IDE Channel, Secondary IDE Channel). If any of them show a PIO mode under "Current Transfer Mode", change the Transfer Mode to "DMA if available" then apply and reboot. Once you've rebooted, go back in to make sure the Current Transfer Mode is shown as "Ultra DMA Mode". Secondly, if you've unplugged and replaced the cable lots of times, chances are you've damaged the cable. Buy a new cable, they're cheap enough.
