Q: I gought a new oem WD SATA 500 Gig hard drive and installed it but when i click on my computer i dont see the hard drive. When i unplug the sata power to the drive then plug it back in i can hear it starting to spin. Is this drive defective or does it need some driver to show up? thanks IT is a SATA drive so there are no jumpers on it. It is an OEM drive so the drive came alone, no box, no manual, no cd. It will be my 3rd HD installed to this PC.
A: New hard drives come without any partitions on them. You will need to go into the "Disk Management" console to initialize and partition the drive. Then you need to format the drive in order to use it. Once all that is done then it will show up in your "My Computer" screen. to get to the "Disk Management" screen, right click on your "My Computer" icon and select "Manage". then go to the Disk Management on the left hand column. You will see the partitioned disk in the right hand side. Right click on the partitioned drive and create the partition and format the drive. here is a link from MS on how to perform it. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/309000
