Q: I have an intel 865GLC mb that I swapped out a 2.4 gig p4 for a 2.8 gig that was running win xp pro. It kept hanging my system and I read that sometimes if you change a CPU it will warrant a reformat and reinstall of windows. So I did that. I have an ATI Raedon x1600 video card that keeps hanging my system with my fresh install. It runs fine in safe mode.....or if I unintall any of the drivers that I've tried (from ATI website and from windows update) and reboot. Can't figure out what is hanging this system. I haven't installed the motherboard video drivers nor the audio card I have installed (the onboard audio is disabled). Any help appreciated. Ok I am convinced this is a video card issue. I did a fresh reinstall of windows after first removing the sound card that was having an IRQ conflict with the video card. When windows first boots up for the first time, it installed a standard vga driver. It worked fine for the ability to do the following: Install network drivers Install Chipset Drivers for Intel 865GLC Download SP3 Additional updates including frame NET 2.0 that ATI requires for driver installs The only thing I've attempted to do after that is install the new catalyst drivers from ATI.com vers 8.6 It will boot up and typically go all the way into windows before resetting the whole box. Sometimes it will stay open long enough for me to allow IE to crash it. I can't see anything else other than the fact that the OS isn't taking the driver like it should be. Any help please? Thanks
A: In effect you've made a new machine, with the different CPU. So also get the motherboard (chipset) drivers from the chipset maker's site (prob. Intel) and also if you can see any for the CPU. BUT first check you're not getting the hang from an IRQ conflict. This won't show in Safe mode, so you'd need run the monitor off the integrated video. You can leave both enabled (you can actually run 2 monitors at once). This lets you start in normal mode so you can see the IRQ settings.
