My computer is not booting up, what could be the cause ?

Q: The computer powers on, but does not boot up. There's nothing showing on the monitor. I tried hitting F8 to boot up in safe mode, but still nothing. I also tried putting in my restore CD, and a Windows 98 boot disk, with no luck.

A: Most monitors have a monitor check you can run. For mine, I hold the power button in when turning it on and I get color bars to show up. If the monitor is working properly, it is likely you have either an issue with your memory or your motherboard. The likely culprit is the motherboard. If you are still running Win98, it would almost be cheaper just to replace your computer.
