External hard drive question? mac and pc formats?

Q: I currently have a Dell desktop and i have a external hard drive with all my pictures, music, videos etc. I am planning on purchasing a macbook pro notebook. I know that external hard drives needed to be formatted to work with the current computer you have. However, what happens when the files i have on the hard drive are formatted for the dell and not the Mac? Will the drive even show up on the mac? Because i plan on selling my dell desktop to help pay for the macbook pro....so this is why i was wondering in advance what i should do? Thanks

A: The drive will show up on the Mac but I'm guessing it will be corrupt (I'm sorry but I don't own a Mac). The Windows format is FAT or NTFS, and Mac's is SATA or ATA. Although if you format your Hard Drive you will lose everything on it.
