My SPEAKERS Won't play any sound?

Q: I've bought new speakers, and connected them in. However, it makes this really LOUD interference noise and DOESN'T Play any audio file, no sound at all. Every setting on the computer is fine, but I don't understand why it's not working? I have plugged the USB part in and put the wire in the green socket, but it doesn't work, I tried the blue one incase it was that one, but still no sound. What do I do? They are brand new speakers. I have tried my old ones and the SAME thing happens.

A: Make sure you have the speakers plugged into the WALL and the HEADPHONES JACK, not the microphone jack. Next, if you are using a Mac, go to SYSTEM PREFERENCES and SOUND. Click on the INPUT selection at the top of the window and select LINE IN (AUDIO LINE IN PORT). Below that, bring the INPUT VOLUME up to full and the OUTPUT VOLUME to how loud you would like the sound. If you are using a PC, it's as simple as making sure the volume's turned up.
