Xbox360 (component/ composite) to Monitor (DVI/ VGA) and Speakers (TRS 2.5mm)

Q: I have just bought myself a 22" monitor, which I intend to use for both my PC and xbox. The monitor has one DVI and one VGA input. THe xbox has either a component (RBG) or composite (Red, Yellow, White) outputs. As the Monitor does not have speakers, I need to output the audio seperately to my speakers. I was thinking that I could look for a composite to DVI (the yellow connector), and another adapter to convert the white connector (audio) to the regular audio jack that will fit my speakers. Will this work? Are there better ways of doing it? Links to adaptors with a description of how best to do this greatly appreciated :) Thanks Im aware that Component is better, however I am unsure how I would get my audio output if I used Component, as I need to connect to external speakers

A: Component cables don't carry audio signals so your audio should be easily extractable from whatever your source is (if it's an xbox, should find red and white cables linked together, just get an RCA to 3.5mm audio jack converter, shouldn't cost more the $4 from circuit city/an electronics store) That being said, You're going to want to do component to VGA NOT DVI. VGA and component are very similar (VGA just carries horizontal and vertical sync on separate pins while component carries it on one the pre-existing color channels.) Doing Component to DVI requires changing the analog component signal into a digital DVI signal, which means you'll have to buy a piece of equipment with an analog-to-digital converter = alot of money. If your monitor is newer (has sync on green), it should be able to handle an almost straight conversion from component to VGA, which means a component-to-VGA cable should be able to do the conversion. Should be able to find one of those online/at a computer/stereo store for around $30
