What does it mean if your monitor's maximum resolution is higher than that of your video card?

Q: Does it mean that even if I set my monitor to the highest settings it still wont perform there. Like for example the monitor is 1920 x 1080 but the video card can only support a maximum of 1680 x 1050 does that mean it will rune and the 1680 no matter how high I set it?

A: Yeah, if you wanna get it to the monitor's max, you'll need to buy a new graphics card. If not, you're stuck with 1680 x 1050. Still good enough, I'm on 1280 x 1024..
