Q: There are 1080p, 1080i, 720p, and 1600p and so on. My monitor is 1280 by 800 and I was wondering if that is 800p or 800i. 1600p is 2560 by 1600, 720p is 1280 by 720, 1080p is 1920 by 1080. So is 1280 by 800 800p?
A: well first you must know what i and p means. i means interlaced and p means progressive. 1080i means that it shows 1080 rows and 1920 columns of pixels, but the rows alternate from frame to frame. Meaning one frame row 1, 3, 5... will show, and the next frame row 2, 4, 6... will show. With 1080p, all of the row will show at the same time frame by frame. That's why 1080i only shows half of the resolution that 1080p shows. But that is all based on the old CRT monitor when it scans the the screen. Now, plasma and LCD just displays depends on the data it gets. Regarding your monitor, you probably have a laptop, am I right? Most modern monitors display in progressive. That doesn't mean that it automatically displays all of your DVDs as high def. It will just display it has enhanced, because DVD movies only have enough data stored in it to display enhanced def.
