Q: I recently had a Windows 98 (which was quite old) and had been updated after some kind of crash. Anyways the updater, a friend of ours, had installed some kind of strange Windows Tutorial which had run up the memory and after I had jammed the computer with images, text files and numerous programs, the computer had crashed due to lack of memory. This last December another friend had updated our 98 to Windows XP Service Pack 2. Everything works fine except I cannot set my resolution above 800x600 (BUT=>) when we were running Windows 98 (very outdated, I know) we were able to set the screen resolution to 1024X___ (i forgot the number lol). Anyways, I've heard this is due to a problem with the VGA (?) or the video card (which for ours is pretty outdated) but when we were using a regular 98 we had the same card as we do now and we could set the resolution higher with no problem. Could this be because of 'administration' problems from the person who updated it, the video card, or Windows XP? I just tried to update the driver but I couldn't find anything. (i'm using a S3 Trio64V+ w/ s3legacy.dll) I downloaded a driver update scanner and (i learned many of my less important drivers were out of date), my video driver is fine altho on one download site it said it was only for 95/98 and it was horrible for XP which may be why it wont go above? Not sure but I can't find any updates or I'm already updated.
A: Go to Start > Run type 'Dxdiag" when it loads click the display tab it will tell you the name of your video card, go the mfg website and get the latest drivers for it and install it should fix it. Uff yeah that's it..S3 are horrible. You may have to shell out $ for a new card...I would suggest a Geforce 4TI..you should be able to get them now for under $40.
