Monitor goes black, why?

Q: I have recently been having troubles with my computer monitor and it's only getting worse. Started out going into hibernation mode and couldn't get the screen to come back until I manually shut the computer down then it would just go black but it wasn't asleep. Now the monitor isn't keeping up with my typing and the screen freezes. I tried the degauss and now just gets a twich in the screen now and then. The mouse icon still moves around on the screen though and seems to work if I click the "Show Desktop" icon only the screen goes black and eventually the desktop shows back up and I keep working. I have a 15" Dell monitor the heavy bulky style the monitor and the system is about 4-5 years old. The computer seems to be working fine. Is it the monitor or the graphics card going bad? Thanks for your help. I don't have another computer to hook this monitor up to inorder to check it against another system. Just purchased a new Acer 19" Widescreen and am still having the same problems. I was told either the monitor or video card. The video card is a NVIDIA GeoForce FX 5200 128MB card that's about 4-5yrs old and used to the max.

A: It sounds more like a Computer problem than a monitor problem. Question: When the Monitor goes black is the Monitor Power light still Green? If it is then I'd lean towards the Computer being the source of the problem. It may help to go to the manufacturers web site, download and run diagnostics against the computer to determine if something can be identified. While by no means are the diagnostics perfect, if something is identified you should have your problem defined. One further item. If a part is found to be bad, consider buying a New computer rather than fixing your current system as the cost may be cheap and the quality of the computer will undoubtedly be better. I Hope this helps!
