Q: Hey, I have an 1280x1024 (5:4) monitor and when I set it to a 4:3 resolution, it just stretches it out so it fits the screen. My question is, how do I just get it to run at 4:3 and leave some black parts at the top and bottom? I need to know because a game I play only has 4:3 resolutions and it looks bad stretched out.
A: To the above poster, 1280x1024 is 5:4 1024/1280 = 0.8 5*0.8 = 4 So the aspect ratio is 5:4 I'm sorry but I don't think there is any way to do this. Monitors are designed simply to scale any resolution given to them (lower than their max resolution) up to fill the screen. You find similar frustrations when trying to run widescreen monitors on a standard resolution and it is stretched.
