A: There are hundreds of different kinds of liquid crystals and I have no idea which ones LCD manufacturers use. But I do know that they're pretty safe and not terribly toxic or at least there's nothing to indicate otherwise. What you should be worried about is mercury and other nasty things found in the backlight.
