Q: Okay I turn it on. Everything loads and it works fine. But then it just shuts off. First the screen goes black and it goes into powersave mode. The mouse and everything is still on but the screen is black. I think it may be our graphics card as we had it for about 3-4 years. But I'm working in safe mode and it hasnt turned off yet. But it seems I cant run anything big without it shutting off. Any one know what might be the problem and how I can fix it. Thanks :)
A: first, try to figure out if it's the monitor or the hardware. Run some kind of music program, and let it run until the computer shuts down again. if the music is still playing, it's a monitor problem. if the music also shuts off, it could be either a software, ROM, or hardware problem. To check the ROM, as the computer is booting, press f10 to get to the ROM settings. Check power-saver options. Do the same thing in windows. Usually, power options are available in the display settings (not the ones that come with your graphics card, but the default ones in windows.) If both settings are correct, then it's a hardware problem. First, make sure your graphics card is properly seated. Also, make sure the contacts haven't oxidized. I use a paper towel to lightly sand the contacts if I see oxidation (don't use a tissue, the fibers break off too easily.) Check if dust has clogged any of the fans in your computer. It is quite possible you will need to replace your video card, although they are usually very dependable and the problem usually is elsewhere. Reading the boards, the problem most people have is with their monitor.
