I am trying to hook up my Compaq laptop to a ViewSonic external monitor and ONLY the desktop background shows.

Q: Help me. No icons no windows show. Ive erased the background to see if they were behind but no. ok so i now relized it is an exstension...but i have no clue how to clone ok so i officially fixed it myself with out those retarded clones you talked about so no thanks...to any of you but ill give points to one of you

A: It will run 2 ways as a "duplicate or clone" of your laptop screen, or as an extension of your laptop screen Since you do not see any Icons on it you are in the extension mode, you can drag icons, windows and so on over to it to increase your workspace (note some windows will not drag over if it is maximized all the way) Now you sound like you want it to be a duplicate of your laptop, right click on the desktop and select properties(personalize if Vista) these are the video settings Now I cant tell you "exactly" where it is as different video cards use different applets there, it may also be in "advanced settings" if there is a button or tab for that What you do want to find is a check box with "extend my desktop to this monitor" or something very close to that, just uncheck that and hit apply and close You can also set the resolution separately on your external monitor(depending on your size preferences)
