Can a Lcd be used without power inverter?

Q: Hey there, i have a 17" dell lcd monitor. The screen is blank so i have no used for it anymore, so i want to make it into a projector. I did some research and found that the power inverters breaks alot on the dells. My question is can i use the monitor without the back light if the power inverter is broken or is that need or the the lcd controller

A: The inverter provides a high voltage that is needed by the cold-cathode florescent bulbs that are encased in the back of the LCD panel and provide the light for the LCD material to let though or block. So, if you can strip the bulbs, light guides and diffusers of the back of the actual panel, without damaging the panel, and get a really bright single point light source while keeping the LCD cool enough, you could build a projector of sorts.
