Q: Just wondering... Is it possible to upgrade my Compaq from 2GB RAM to 3GB if I only have 2 DIMM slots. My configuration now is 1GB in each slot, (2x1GB). Could I go 1x2GB and 1x1GB=3 or do I have to install in like pairs and go 2x2GB=4GB ? This is DDR2 memory (PC2 6400 800mhz). The max for my motherboard is 4GB but I am running Vista 32 bit which, as you may know, will only digest a little over 3GB. THANKS for any help you can give !!! Sorry guys.... This is a SR5450F desktop running an Intel E2180 dual-core. It has dual channel memory.
A: If you really need more than 2GB, then go 2x2GB, 1GB+2GB will max it out for 32bit but you will loose a lot of performance as the memory are no longer running in dual-channel mode. Vista32 may not use all 4GB but will do around 3.2'ish and with SP1 will report the full 4GB even though it wont use all of it but wont do any harm, with 2GB DDR2 price still a bit high, only upgrade if you really needed the extra memory.
