Q: I just got a new Sony Vaio laptop. I have a regular computer with a DSL connection. In order to get my laptop to have the internet, do I go buy one of those boxes with the antenna in the computer section and plug it in or what? How do I get wireless in my home? I don't mind having my desktop not be wireless, but I'd like my laptop to get internet in the house.
A: Be sure that your DSL modem is not already wireless capable. If it is not, you can either buy a "combo" box that is a DSL modem and a wireless router in one, or you can get an add-on wireless router that plugs into the ethernet port in your DSL modem. The wireless router will have 4 ports to plug your current computer into, so it will work just fine, and you can have wireless access from your laptop. You need to see if you have built-in wireless with your laptop (intel centrino for example) or if it came with another wireless adapter. If you have a switch on the side of you laptop to turn wireless on/off, you have built in wireless. If not, purchase a wireless adapter. I would suggest calling your ISP and asking them if they supply wireless devices for you to use. They can answer questions for you specifically for your setup. It will be more expensive to purchase through them, but if you need help down the road, they will be able to help you with that.
