Q: I was given recently a free laptop computer which doesn't start. I press the power button, the light indicates power is on, but there is nothing. No sounds, no screen, nothing. Even the light indicating that the hard drive is working doesn't light up. Does this have a bad hard drive? Or is the motherboard blown? I thought it might be reparable but now I'm not so sure. I would appreciate your opinions! PS, to turn the power off, I hold the power button down for five seconds, and that turns it off.
A: Not being a computer expert, but it kinda does sound like the hard drive might be fried or bad. It has to work, because that's what the computer uses to start itself up. That's where all the programs are to get it started. The best thing to do is find a local computer repair shop that charges a small amount (like $25-30) for a simple examination, and then they'll give you their recommendation for fixing it. Unfortunately, lots of places say that 'you're computer is too old, we need to sell you a new one." Don't take it to a big store repair, becuase they'd charge too much. But a local small shop should be able to tell you if the hard drive is dead or not. If it is dead, it kinda means even more expense, because you've got to replace the Windows programming on it, to put on the new hard drive, and that's not cheap. It'd be better just to junk this and try and get a different laptop. sorry. The money you'd spend on getting this one fixed would be better spent going towards a newer or at least a working used laptop.
