Q: On my other laptop (Compaq Presario V5000), I was messing around one day and I accidentally put a password on the BIOS Setup Utility and I can't remember what it is. I was told that the only way to reset it was to take out the internal battery of the computer. How do I do that? And is it something only a technician can do? How much would it cost to take to a technician? I don't even use the laptop anymore, but it bugs me because I would like to reinstall the operating system.
A: Taking out the battery or shorting two pins (the CORRECT pins ) should wipe the password out (without wiping out the hard drive). You obviously aren't confortable with this so don't do it. It varies from computer to computer anyway. Take it to a technician. You can try and find the "service manual" or "field manual" for the make and model--it's usually on the web. But you need to be comfortable with doing this stuff in any case.
