Average LapTop RAM and what do you think bout....?

Q: How much ram should i get for my laptop(running vista)?? and what do you think about the Inspiron 1525?

A: Sorry don't know that particular model, but maybe some general advice will still help? Really the amount of RAM depends upon what you want to use it for, which programs you'll be using, and also whether you need to keep a lot of programs running all at the same time. You can run Vista with 1GB RAM, but for most people that's really not very good and the computer will not run very quickly. With 2GB it will be fine for 'normal' home or small business use with web browsing, messaging, Microsoft Office, etc. And in fact adding more RAM will not make much of a visible difference. Some things need lots of RAM, as much as you can get. These include video editing, retouching large hi-resolution photos (eg RAW captured with a a digital SLR), 3D design. 4GB RAM would be OK for this kind of use, but then again for higher quality video or 3D you could be limited by the laptop or graphics card anyway! If you play a lot of action games with great 3D graphics, once again you should get as much RAM as you can afford, certainly no less than 2GB but many games will play more smoothly with more RAM. But for games the graphics card is often more important than more RAM. Ensure that the laptop has a graphics card with at least 128MB dedicated video RAM. Shared RAM for video is not good for fast action games or 3D design. If you intend upgrading the RAM, check out the pricing for buying it separately from the computer. Shops and laptop manufacturers (including DELL) can make more money out of the RAM than the rest of the computer! It's easy to click that little option on the DELL configuration, but if you buy and install a RAM upgrade separately it can literally be half the price or less. Rob.
